Zsofia Keresztes “After dreams: I dare to defy the damage” Pavilion of Hungary Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
Born in 1985 in Budapest, Zsofia Keresztes graduated from the University of Fine Arts, where she had transposed plane images into three-dimensional architectures made of fabrics.
In 2016, polystyrene became the material of his sculptures simultaneously as the coloured glass mosaics that cover them.
His works are presented at the Pavilion of Hungary of the Biennale at the Giardini.
Zsofia Keresztes “After Dreams: I Dare to Defy the Damage”
Sculpture - Expanded polystyrene and fibreglass covered with hand-cut mosaics. 2022These colourful sculptures with bulbous and fluid shapes evoke modelling clay works made by Picasso children, so much so that they would gladly be installed in public parks.
They study the different phases, or stages of a quest for identity, freeing themselves from the weight of common experience through the effort of reflection.
They refer to an episode of a short story by Antal Szerb entitled “Journey to the Moonlight”, in which the protagonist, plagued by existential emptiness, discovers by seeing the mosaics of Ravenna that his identity is not only socio-cultural but that it also builds on fragments of the past.
