The works of the artist Tatsuo Ikeda (1928-2020, Japan) are exhibited in the Corderie of the Arsenal in Venice.
As a Japanese, Tatsuo Ikeda experienced the suffering of war and the scale of the disasters caused by nuclear weapons.
After the war, he moved to Tokyo to enrol in the Tama Art and Drawing School, where he was part of an anti-imperialist and pacifist avant-garde art movement producing works that showcased Japanese culture and identity.
The works painted on paper in the surrealist style exhibited here were made between 1960 -1980, years marked by pacifist, anti-nationalist and antimilitarist ideas and movements.
These paintings are the fruit of an imaginary journey to the original Universal, to the beginnings of the world where the infinite possibilities culminated in this myriad of increasingly complex materials, the birth of conscious organisms, and the emergence of struggles and oppositions.
