Tau Lewis “Angelus Mortem” “Vena Cava” “Sol Niger, with my fire I may destroy everything by my breaths, souls are lifted from purified earth” Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
Tau Lewis was born in 1993 in Toronto, Canada; she lives and works in New York. Her works are exhibited at the Corderie of the Arsenal in Venice.
Inspired by Nigerian Yoruba ritual masks, Tau Lewis created sculptures three meters high by recycling recycled materials such as leather and furs from mink, beaver, wolf, rabbit, lamb and sable.
His three sculptures, “Angelus Mortem” “Vena Cava” and “Sol Niger” are gods that dominate and watch over us.
Faced with them, you experience a double sensation of attraction and worry.
We feel attracted to these particularly expressive, beautiful, and original masks.
But at the same time, there is a form of concern linked in part to the materials used by Tau Lewis, materials that give these masks a strange air and an expression of power.
A form of power that is both passive and ready to come to life, set in motion as if they could suddenly come to life and leave their wall.
