Portia Zvavahera “Captured Owls” “Fallen Owls” “Fallen People” “Uplifted” Venice Biennale Art Exhibition

Portia Zvavahera was born in 1985 in Zimbabwe, where she lives and works. Her works are exhibited at the Corderie of the Arsenal in Venice.

A spiral of coloured dots draws a transparent veil around a black circle to delimit a kind of nest sheltering a group of strange characters kneeling in front of captive owls.

A tragic face-to-face encounter, a kind of trial resulting in the death sentence of the birds of the night, is illustrated by the painting entitled “Fallen Owls” where the owls slaughtered, sacrificed, fall headfirst under the feet of three spectres protected and carried by the great black and red wing; the red blood of owls that saves souls from the darkness.

These two paintings inspired by ancient rites from a mysticism imbued with animism are presented in comparison, perhaps in competition, with “Fallen People” and “Uplifted” inspired by Christian mysticism by offering another image of redemption and reconciliation.
