The works of Birgit Jürgenssen (1949-2003) are exhibited in the central pavilion of the Biennale at the Giardini.
The Austrian artist Birgit Jürgenssen was a photographer, painter, sculptor, and clothing designer; works carried out from a feminist perspective in the face of the traditionalist mores of the Viennese bourgeoisie.
The paintings in this exhibition were drawn in coloured pencils on handmade paper.
Made during the 1970s, their surrealist aspect responds to identity problems addressed in a psychoanalytic way.
The Crawfish Woman from Missing Limbs, the swimmer with her frog bone corset Frog Shoulder Belt or the seated nude of a female cat show the instincts, dreams, desires, and eroticism that animates them.
