Ruth Asawa “Hanging Eight Separate Cones” Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
The works of Ruth Asawa (1926-2013 USA) are exhibited in the Corderie of the Arsenal in Venice.
During the Second World War, Ruth Asawa, born in 1926 in the United States, was locked up with her family in a camp reserved for Japanese Americans, where she met cartoon directors for Disney who taught her how to draw and paint.
In 1949 she began to make sculptures in braided metal wire, following a Mexican method of braiding baskets.
“Hanging Eight Separate Cones” made in 1952 features eight finely braided cones stacked like hats and suspended without touching each other by a wire passing through their tops.
The works of Ruth Asawa exhibited here are light and transparent, with simple and elegant shapes of geometric bodies in weightlessness.
