Nicholas Hlobo’s ‘Unduluko’ and ‘Umrhubuluzi’ at the Corderia dell’Arsenale in Venice, 2026 Biennale

Nicholas Hlobo The body of Nicholas Hlobo’s humanoid sculpture “Umrhubuluzi” is made of rubber.
Rubber is one of the most commonly used materials in the Xhosa townships of South Africa, the artist’s country of origin.
To the rubber, which Nicholas Hlobo regards as a symbol of masculinity, the artist has added a red ribbon, a symbol of femininity.
Nicholas Hlobo expresses his identity as a gay Xhosa man through the feminine representation of his male sculptures.
