Seyni Awa Camara, Central Pavilion of the Giardini, Venice Biennale 2026
The sculptures of Seyni Awa Camara, a Senegalese artist who sadly passed away this year, depict figures that are halfway between human and animal.Bodies into which small, ape-like or canine-like creatures are integrated—and even clinging—along the entire height of the sculptures.
These composite beings illustrate an imaginary world rich in spiritual symbols.
Notably, the mother goddess of humanity, whose body is encircled by human arms, or the primordial couple with their descendants gathered above a head resting on two feet.
Beautiful sculptures full of presence; all these eyes look at us and question us.
