The work presented by Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka at the 2026 Venice Biennale, “Namazu”, is inspired by a Japanese legend in which a giant catfish causes earthquakes by thrashing about at the bottom of the sea.

The mosaic of papers printed by the artist depicts this whale-like catfish causing earth tremors and tidal waves around it.

Its white body occupies the centre of the work, and Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka has superimposed other fish upon it, the central one of which is clearly a catfish.
