Liu Wei “Microworld” and “Devourment” Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition

Liu Wei was born in China in 1972. He lives and works in Beijing.

His works are exhibited at the Venice Art Biennale at the Arsenal and in the central pavilion of the Giardini.

His large sculptures evoke the formality and splendour of modern scenography, rich in geometric shapes.

In his “Microworld” (2018), the artist mixes spheres and metal sheets of all sizes that represent molecules, protons and other microscopic entities that are excessively enlarged in this work where the invisible becomes present and powerful at the same time.

His “Microworld” is protected by glass. You cannot approach it; you can only look at it in its “window”.

His second work, presented at the Giardini, is entitled “Devourment” (2019).

This sculpture is an amalgam of motley objects from dog toys made of cowhide, through books, domestic electronic devices, Chinese porcelain to salvaged building materials.

The bringing together of all these objects, whether natural or man-made, reflects the artist’s interest in the various spheres of our existence.
