Alvise Mocenigo, born in 1507, was Doge of Venice from 1570 to 1577.

Alvise Mocenigo was a brilliant diplomat before being elected Doge.

Here he is depicted by Tintoretto at the start of his reign, wearing the Corno ducale, the emblem of the Doges of Venice.

Although his clothing and headdress indicate his noble status and power, he is not depicted seated on a throne.

Doge Alvise Mocenigo Whilst he was the ruler of Venice, Doge Mocenigo is depicted in a simple and natural pose.

His gaze and his face convey the calm and seriousness of a good family man, an honest man who watches over Venice.

Doge Mocenigo had to face numerous problems, notably the war against the Turks, which resulted in the loss of the island of Cyprus.

He also had to deal with the terrible plague epidemic that ravaged Venice for a year and a half, from June 1575 to December 1576.

Doge Alvise Mocenigo This epidemic claimed 61,000 lives, and Venice’s population had fallen from 195,000 to 134,000.

In the hope that God would hear Venice’s suffering, the Doge Alvise Mocenigo vowed to build a church dedicated to Christ the Saviour on the island of Giudecca.

This would become the Church of the Redentore.

Alvise Mocenigo laid the foundation stone of the Church of the Redentore in May 1577.
