“Emperor Marcus Aurelius”
Sculpture – Marble (Height 57 cm) Mid-2nd centuryThis statue depicts Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121–180 AD) during his Stoic youth, reminding us that he was a great philosopher and author of the famous “Meditations”.

Emperor Marcus Aurelius Machiavelli described him as the last Roman emperor belonging to the so-called ‘Five Good Emperors’ of the Antoninus dynasty.
Emperor Hadrian had adopted Marcus Aurelius’s uncle, Antoninus Pius, who succeeded him after his death.
Antoninus Pius adopted Marcus Aurelius, who had married his daughter, Faustina the Younger.
In the year 161, upon Antoninus’s death, Marcus Aurelius became co-emperor alongside his brother Lucius Aurelius Verus.
He reigned for nearly twenty years until the year 180.
A magnificent bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius is housed in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
