Paolo Veronese, The Annunciation, at the Accademia Galleries in Venice
Paolo Veronese (1528–1588) “The Annunciation”
Annunciation Painting – Oil on canvas (271 x 541 cm) 1578
This “Annunciation of the Virgin” used to hang in the hall of the Albergo of the Scuola dei Mercanti in the Cannaregio District.
This work by Paolo Veronese was exhibited at the Galleria dell’Accademia from 1812.
Annunciation This Scuola still exists in Venice and is situated to the left of the church of the Madonna dell’Orto, where Tintoretto is buried.
At the top of the tympanum arch is the hand blessing the Cross, which is the symbol of the Scuola.
Above the tympanum, Veronese painted the sculptures of Charity and Faith.
These sculptures were then located in the hall of the Albergo of the Scuola dei Mercanti.
They are now on display at the Marciana Library.
Annunciation At the base of the two brown columns marking the threshold are the coats of arms of the families who commissioned the painting, the Cadabrazzo and the Cottoni.
The Virgin Mary’s surprise at the Angel’s appearance is conveyed by her gesture of recoil as she places her right hand over her heart.
The dove representing the Holy Spirit flies directly towards Mary, bringing her divine light.
The Angel holds a bouquet of white lilies symbolising purity and conveys his message by pointing to the heavens to clearly indicate to the Virgin the heavenly origin of her mission as a herald.
