Peggy Guggenheim Collection: An Unfinished Palazzo

Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection Museun in Venice in Italy
Palazzo Venier dei Leoni
The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, in which the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is located in Venice, is a palace of architect Lorenzo Boschetti. The palace construction was initiated in 1748 and then stopped, even though only the ground floor had been built.

The Venier were one of the most influential and wealthy families in Venice, they had given 3 Doges to Venice.

They wanted to build here the most beautiful and large palace of the Grand Canal, a palace that had to compete, if not crush in beauty and size the palace that was just on the opposite bank, the Palazzo Corner della Ca' Grande (now the seat of the Province of Venice).

It is not known whether it is because of this competition with the neighbour, who would have intervened to stop the construction, or for economic reasons, the vastness of the project being above the means of the family or rather the heirs, because the initiator of the project had died in the meantime... still it is that the construction was stopped and that the immense projected palace remained reduced to its ground floor.

“Venier dei Leoni“ name would then have come from the Venetians who baptized palace so because, in the garden, the Venier had a lion in a cage. But for others, it was the lions that adorn it that would have given it its name.

It is a collection of contemporary art where there are works by many painters of the 20th century.
