Raymond Georges Yves Tanguy was born on January 5, 1900, in Paris.

During his studies at high school, he met Henri Matisse and then became friends throughout their life.

In 1918 he entered the merchant navy and travelled to Africa, South America and England.

In 1920, during his national service at Lunéville, he met Jacques Prévert, who became a friend.

In 1922 he was back in Paris, where he decided to become a painter after seeing Giorgio de Chirico's works.

Yves Tanguy became interested in Surrealism in 1924 and joined the Surrealist group the following year.

His first solo exhibition took place at the Surrealist Gallery in 1927.

In 1928 he participated in the Surrealist Exhibition at the gallery “Au Sacre du Printemps” in Paris, along with Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and André Masson.

In 1940 he married the painter Kay Sage and moved to Woodbury, Connecticut.

He then exhibited around the world and obtained American nationality in 1948.

Yves Tanguy died in Woodbury on January 15 1955.
