Cittanova is invaded, Doge Giovanni Galbaio is deposed.
Obelario degli Antenori becomes the new Doge.

Pepin, son of Charlemagne, unsuccessfully attempts to conquer the Venetian islands.

810 - 811

The seat of government is transferred from Malamocco (then called Metamauco) to Rivo Alto, now known as Rialto. This is the true date of the founding of Venice as a city.

Agnello Participazio (or Partecipazio) is appointed Doge of the Realtine Islands, which form the historic Venice of today.

812

Another important date in the history of Venice. This is the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, by which Emperor Charlemagne leaves Venice under the dependence of Byzantium.

827

Foundation of the Monastery of San Zaccaria.
Giustiniano Partecipazio is appointed Doge.

828

The body (supposedly) of St. Mark the Evangelist is stolen by two Venetian merchants in Alexandria, Egypt. They bring it back to Venice, hidden in pork so that the Egyptian Muslim soldiers cannot discover the body.

The arrival of St. Mark's body in Venice is an event that will largely mark the history of Venice.

Giovanni Partecipazio I is appointed Doge.

836

Giovanni Participazio I was in turn deposed and replaced by Doge Pietro Tradonico.

840

A treaty was signed between the Franks and the Byzantine Empire, the Pactum Lotarii, which decreed the political unity of the Duchy of Venice.

864

Another Doge is assassinated: Pietro Tradonico is murdered in San Zaccaria and replaced by Orso Participazio I.

881

Orso Participazio I dies and his son Giovanni takes his place as Doge of Venice under the name Orso Participazio II.

887

Election of Doge Pietro Candiano I. He dies shortly afterwards in the war between Venice and the Narantian Slavs.

Pietro Tribuno becomes Doge.

910 (or 912 according to historians)

Death of Pietro Tribuno and election of Doge Orso Participazio II, also known as Badoer.

A new Doge is elected: Pietro Candiano II.

Election of a new Doge, Pietro Participazio, known as Badoer.

Pietro Candiano III is elected Doge.

Pietro Candiano IV is elected Doge.

Assassination of Doge Pietro Candiano IV and election of Doge Pietro Orseolo I.

This was also the year of the reconstruction of St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace.

Election of Vitale Candiano as the new Doge.

Tribuno Memmo is elected Doge and succeeds Vitale Candiano.

Foundation of the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore on the island of the same name, located just opposite the Doge's Palace, on the other side of St. Mark's Basin.

Pietro Orseolo II is elected Doge.

992

March 992: An important date for the future of Venice, as it was in this month that the Byzantine emperors Basil and Constantine promulgated the "Golden Bull", which, in exchange for Venetian military support against the Muslims, granted their merchants privileges in terms of taxes.

These privileges gave them a clear advantage over their competitors at the time, the Lombards of Apulia, the Amalfitans and the Jews.

12 July 992: The Venetians' commercial privileges were confirmed in the Kingdom of Italy by Emperor Otto III.

998 to 1001

The Venetians conquer Dalmatia.
