1000

Foundation of the Church of San Samuele.

In the same year, following the victory of Pietro Orseolo II at sea and in Dalmatia, the ceremony of the Sposalizio del Mare (Marriage of the Sea) was established for the feast of the Sensa. This is the symbolic marriage of the Doge and the sea.

1001

The Doge returned victorious in July from his expedition to Dalmatia. In 1001, he took the title of Dux Veneticorum et Dalmaticorum.

1002

16 November: Emperor Henry II confirms the privileges granted to the Venetians and recognises the Doge's right to bear the title of Dux Veneticorum et Dalmaticorum: Duke of the Venetians and Dalmatians.

1002

The Saracens besieged Bari in 1002 and 1003.

1007

The Venetians began construction of the church of San Zan Degolà.

1009

Ottone, son of Doge Pietro Orseolo II, succeeds his deceased father.

1023

The Patriarch of Aquileia, Poppo, attacks and ravages the city of Grado.

1024

December 1024: The legitimacy of the patriarchal title of Grado is recognised by the Synod of Rome.

1026

Pietro Barbolano Centranico is elected Doge of Venice.

1027

6 April: Grado loses its status. The Synod of Latran declares that Grado is now a simple parish under the jurisdiction of Aquileia.

1031

Pietro Barbolano Centranico is overthrown and Patriarch Orso becomes Regent of the Duchy of Venice.

1032

Domenico Orseolo becomes Doge for one day. Domenico Flabianico replaces him.

1043

Domenico Contarini becomes Doge.

1053

Decision to found the Abbey of San Nicolo di Lido.

1071

Domenico Selvo is elected Doge.

1072

The Normans capture the city of Palermo in Sicily, bringing an end to the Arab Kingdom of Sicily.

1082

Following their victory over the Normans, Venice secures maritime and commercial privileges throughout the East from Byzantium. In May 1082, the Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus promulgates a new Golden Bull in favour of Venice.

1084

October 1084: The tide turned, and the Normans defeated the Venetians at Corfu.

December 1084
Vitale Falier is elected Doge.

1085

Summer 1085: The Venetians take revenge on the Normans, defeating them in Albania, at Butrint.

1094

Glory and honours. The Doge takes the title of Duke of Dalmatia and Croatia.

This is also the year when the body of St. Mark, which had been lost, is ‘miraculously’ found... (see here for the myth of the apparition of 8 October)
Following this, St. Mark's Basilica is solemnly consecrated.

1095

November 1095: Pope Urban II proclaims the Crusade.

December 1095: Vitale Michiel I was elected Doge.

1099

Jerusalem was taken by the Crusaders.
