On 8 March 2020, with the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Venice imposed a strict lockdown.

Everything in the city ground to a halt.

With no planes in the sky, not a soul wandering the streets, and no boats on the canals, the city’s birds were given complete freedom.

The situation was unprecedented.

Never before had Venice appeared like this: shops closed, curtains drawn, the silence was palpable; save for a few vaporetti and the odd freight boat, the canals became empty and mirror-smooth; there was not a single ‘ciao’ shouted from one street to another, no children filled the squares with their joyous cries; and church bells no longer signalled the times for Mass, only the regular hours of the day.

Stepping outside our house engendered a curious mix of feelings: vulnerability and pleasure.

Faced with the silent emptiness of an unusually sleepy Venice, we felt an uncontrollable anxiety.

But this quickly faded as we were overwhelmed by the city’s powerful magic: this historic slumber let us to enjoy some one-on-one time with the city, and the anxiety-provoking silence offered a golden opportunity to rediscover its intimacy.

This emptiness, this extraordinary situation that was in complete contrast to our past experience, brought exceptional moments of serenity. The city’s unveiled beauty tookb hold of our entire being.

These were unique moments of happiness when the impossible and the unimaginable became reality: seeing and experiencing Venice in solitude.

This was Venice as we would never have dared to dream.
